"Pleasure Pain Fighting Rose" was recorded during
1994, within the confines of the Blackhead/Whitehead bedroom (except "Sugar,"
recorded entirely on the Revox machines in CKMS, Studio B). It spans
several good and bad experiences, conflicts, relationships and events.
Ultimately, this tape is a cheerful "YOU'RE HISTORY" to those who were
involved.
All tracks recorded, written & performed
by A.Thornton except sections of "PPFR" (Delays and rhythm by Neb Rakic,
"Frustrated Cat" guitar by Eli McIlveen). Mixed by A.Thornton; effects
and left-speaker finessing by Jim Dejong (January 22, 1995). All
tracks (except "Sugar" and "Venezuela") recorded on Dave's Yamaha MT120
4-track, which later became my Yamaha MT120 4-track. Packaged April
'95.
Special thanks to all those involved: Jim, Dave
(for infinite patience), Eli, Neb, Bronwyn (mind-link) Atkinson, Raven
(for helping package the last tape, and for other advice), and Ben (for
assisting in the creation of that 'headset sound' on "Hook").
1994 ended poorly, for reasons I don't exactly remember.
I do know that Mindsculpture was finished by the time PPFR came
out, which was unfortunate and inevitable, and that we'd had a heck of
a time getting the 8 Uneasy Pieces tape mastered. "Hook" embodies
some of what was going on at that time on the job front (though the original
version of "Hook" was called something unweildy like "Nadine Is Here With
Them Nadine Is Dead With Them Until Until.") For the complete
and original source recording used in "Hook," check out Mission Control
(MUTE6).
Both "PPFR" (the song) and "Sugar" were recorded
and broadcast as a single 30-minute episode of Philler on CKMS,
though the version of "Sugar" here is about 2 1/2 minutes shorter than
the original (due to time constraints on the cassette). "PPFR" (the
song) is in some ways a distillation of sources from "Die...Alive!"
and "Shoot The Dog!" was from an instrumental track that I think was called
"Mean To Kids." "Sugar" -- like "The Unsweetened Sugar" on Plain
Talk About Dogs -- was recorded more-or-less on-the-fly in Studio B;
members of Philler contributed without ever realizing it, during
a planning session between recording.
"Carriage Jam" was a weird-out inspired by Jim,
who had explained how much fun you could have generating feedback on your
4-track. I ended up having a little bit too much fun. It's
called "Carriage Jam" because the master tape glitched and froze near the
end of the track, which was probably God's way of saying "alright, enough
already." Providence is a great editor.
"Resolution" -- featuring a Fleetwood Mac "Tusk"
sample -- was recorded after a cold and unpleasant New Year's Eve at the
Bovine Sex Club in Toronto. Rain + January + Canada = laryngitis.
Jim arrived with his effects processors to mix down
most of the tracks, and he stepped in to have some fun with "Sugar."
I became convinced that I needed some effects processors of my own...
