     All tracks recorded in the claustrophobic confines of the Blackhead/Whitehead bedroom during winter/spring 1994.  "Doll-Like" & "Tatyana" were recorded without multi-tracking; "Crayford Street" & "Whip" were recorded & mixed on Matt's Fostex; the rest were recorded during an intense week with a Tascam 242.

    All tracks composed, recorded & performed by A.Thornton (Sampler, sequencer, keyboard, vocals, tapes) with guest musicians Neb Rakic (Recording, readings, Red Baron bottle & delays on "Delirium" & "Finger") and Eli McIlveen (Guitar & shakers on "Cthulhu," "Sad Cat" & "Tatyana.") Crows on "Delirium" by Jeremy Morrow.

    Songs 15 to 19 are some previously unreleased songs recorded with Detlef Burghardt, originally to be released under the band name "Fond Of The Drone." Detlef plays guitar on all tracks, and shared all compositional duties. Most of these were improvisations recorded straight to cassette, though a few of the later songs had the benefit of four-tracking. "Kashmir Two" was written by Page/Plant/Jones/Bonham.

    Special thanks to those directly responsible: Matt, all at CKMS (100.3 FM), those at Philler, those at the Writer's Workshops, Clay, Jim, Neb, Detlef, Maryjo, Bronwyn, Cat, Adrian, Mark S., and (as usual) the ever-responsible bears & golden retrievers.
 

    Through Philler (a half-hour sketch-comedy program which aired every week on CKMS), I met Eli McIlveen, who had performed with his own band (Spastic Attack Dogs) and showed interest in collaborating.  He owned curious pieces of equipment, some of it homemade.  He filled little plastic easter-eggs with rice to make musical shakers.  He was experimenting with his guitar in new and novel ways.  The first collaborative track was the beautiful "Tatyana," which Eli feels is Eno-derivative, but is still one of my favourites.  A few weeks later, he came back for more recording, but things weren't going well until the cat (Sukie) began crying mournfully to be let out of the room.  This turned into "Song For A Sad Cat," and then -- shortly after -- "Cthulhu Eats All the Fresh Fruits That He Wants," which employed the all-important Mindsculpture tool, "The VoiceFucker."  This tool has since been lost or given away, I don't remember which.
    This cassette was originally conceived as "Paige Of Dogs," but the "Die...Alive!" title seemed more interesting.  Some of the sequencing on this tape was done with an actual little sequencer, but the rest was just variations on a single-bar programmed into the Yamaha keyboard, triggering the sampler.
    Neb also showed up to play with the four-track, and did some readings for "Delirium," which was originally -- in a slightly different version -- called "Dichote (try this task)."  The effected crows in the background of "Delirium" are courtesy Jeremy Morrow, a Mindsculpture collaborator.  Neb also contributed his signature delay genius to "Take In The Finger."  Not bad for a week's work.
