What's Inside, and Why?
This is a collection of the more discreet moments
between 1993 and 1998 while UPhold were mistakenly referred to as “GREENman”.
During the most recent parade, Mr. Bones presented a gripping tableau of
those 6 eventful years. If you missed it (or you would just like
a momento), this CD is for you.
These tracks are not a representative history.
In the interests of quantity -- a philosophy UPhold were forced to adopt
-- many of the longer songs have been excluded. There are, for instance,
no songs from “Ernesto” or “The Grey Yonder,” and the exclusion of the
definitive, 12-minute long version of “Sugar” is a source of grief to everyone
involved. “We cannot downplay the influence that Jim DeJong has had
upon UPhold,” Violent Daisy proclaimed, referring to his contributions
on “Sugar,” and to his ongoing inspiration in general. Since the
release of this CD, Ms. Daisy has used her influence as “Empress of Defiance”
to create a permanent exhibition around this track in UPhold’s hometown.
It is unlikely, however, that the average citizen will ever experience
it.
You will find the talents of Eli McIlveen here,
illustrating his ability to create a grand effect with the simplest techniques.
There is also a long undiscovered gem here: “Audrey,” one of the many tracks
recorded with Detlef Burghardt under the band name “Fond Of The Drone.”
Another unreleased track, “WWW.BANDD.MIX,” is a delightful remix of the
early track “Woman With The Whip,” a song frequently sung in the glorious
playgrounds of Defiance.
But to compare obscurities with obscurities
is fruitless. This “GREENman 101” collection is a truncated rendition
of last year’s tableau, an exhibition of songs recorded in many different
ways, on many different pieces of equipment, and in many different “studios.”
But every place is just the same, isn’t it? So we won’t quibble over
the when’s, why’s, and wherefor’s. We will only listen, and think
about what happens next.
All of these songs were burned to CD-R in Studio
B of CKMS. Some of them were remastered from the original cassette
4-tracks, others were taken from the cleanest mix-downs available.
Unfortunately, most of them were not very clean. All tracks were
written and performed by Muffy St. Bernard, with the exceptions of #’s
3 & 6 (with Eli McIlveen) and #13 (with Detlef Burghardt).

or you can always check out the website at http://members.xoom.com/dangermuff
for information about ordering other stuff from UPhold or GREENman.
Extra special thanks goes out to Jim DeJong
at DDT for carrying these releases and his constant inspiration, to Eli
McIlveen (Fourprint) for fun collaboration, information and friendship,
and to CKMS for their studio time and their encouragement to create, create,
create!
With GREENman retiring, it seemed fitting
to come up with a collection of "hits." The discography contains
a number of little discreet songs in between long mushy tracks, so for
the sake of those little songs...the compilation.
Where possible, the original 4-track masters were
remixed to improve on the sound quality of the originals, and some tracks
ended up significantly altered, for better or for worse. As well,
a few unreleased tracks showed up. "www.bandd.mix" is a redone version
of "Woman With The Whip" (from Drabbletales), and tells the true
story of Mistress Tortilla, who I had the misfortune of sitting beside
at a Boudoir Noir fetish show (this song is part 2 of the "know
your boodles" series). "Audrey" was originally recorded with Detlef
and intended for a future (never released) Fond of the Drone album.
The woman who inspired the song was married just a month ago (winter, 2001).
The Ween influence is pretty obvious.
"The True Story Of Muffy St. Jacques (Edited) (Unabridged)"
originally appeared on Austente Recordings' Art Sickness 2 compilation,
and was inexplicably labelled "The Sad Story Of Muffy St. Jacques" there.
This is a slightly different version. As well, "Debbil's Advocate"
is the final segment of the L'il Debbil side of the DDT-produced
GREENman / TUOB split cassette.
The CD-R has an unfortunate flaw: tracks 2, 7 &
8 are mastered at a much lower level than the other tracks. This
will be corrected in future burnings. The original plan was to release
this as a 90-minute cassette as well -- so the full version of "Sugar,"
as well as "Maui Ukulele On A Boat" could be included -- but for whatever
reason that never happened.
Those crafty enough to take the backing off their
CD discovered an UPhold paper doll with a set of clothes (Torch Singer,
Avenger, Secretary and Club Queen): "It’s easy and fun to dress up your
very own UPhold doll! Whether dressed as a cabaret chanteuse, a sensible
secretary, a dangerous avenger or a slinky clubgoer, your UPhold doll will
be the sexiest two-dimensional cut-out of them all!"
