Tips & Tricks

There are quite a few tips in the game's online help (which you can access by typing "help"), but here's the real skinny, spelled out in no uncertain terms:

1) To win the game you need to find the exit door (inconveniently located in the room farthest from the entrance to the cave, which doesn't necessarily mean it's on the bottom level) and unlock it with three keys.  Each of the keys is initially held by a "boss creature."  Two of the creatures (the Wumpus and the Boga) are very deep in the labyrinth, while the third one (the Hurkle) is usually about halfway down.

The tricky thing about the Hurkle is that he hides in water, preferably warm, slow-moving pools.  If he doesn't find you first you might need to jump into suspicious pools and "search"...but be careful, he's pretty nasty.

2) The cave consists of 100 rooms, equally separated into five different levels.  The deeper you go, the more difficult things will become -- the creatures get stronger and the changes in depth get more extreme -- but the rewards are greater as well.  And in order to win the game you WILL need to go all the way to the bottom.

3) You start the game in a somewhat weakened state and with a low maximum strength...most of the creatures will have a higher maximum strength than you, and they might also have highly damaging weapons.  The more dangerous creatures are farther down in the labyrinth, but that doesn't mean they won't come wandering up to get you.  Each creature has a different AI which dictates how it moves...some go looking for treasures, some seek out prey, some try to find room to breed, and a few move in a "patrol" pattern.  Not all creatures want to hurt you, but one that is wounded will probably strike out blindly if it wants to escape.

4) Each level contains barrels of radioactive ooze which can raise your maximum strength.  The ooze is more powerful on lower levels.  There are also a few other ways of raising your maximum strength (which you will certainly need to do in order to survive).

5) When you begin the game, the first thing you should do is grab the canteen and go searching for water.  Once you've filled your canteen, you can usually rely on food pellets, cave fungus and corpses for food.  Be sure to turn off your glow bar when you don't need it, otherwise it might need to recharge in a bad spot.

6) It's best to explore each level completely before going down further, so you can find any weapons or barrels on the way.  Stay out of fast-moving water, as it's liable to drag you down much faster than you can handle.  As your strength increases you will be able to better deal with waterfalls, depth changes and heavy loads (though ropes are great for getting you out of a jam).

7) Save often, especially if you are unfamiliar with the monsters!  I've done my best to make sure that the game is relatively fair, but the random nature of the caves makes it difficult to do...beware the low-level monster who finds an express route to the top!  Fortunately, you can usually hear them coming and get out of the way...few monsters can move as fast as you can.
