Too Darn Hot!

During the recent Miss Renaissance 2002 pageant we had to kick ass in a lot of categories, but the one I remember most fondly was Talent.  After weeks of preparation I finally got a chance to strut my stuff with Sebastian, my favourite 50's sidekick.  The result: a "Best Talent" award and a chance to wear a really fabulous outfit.

Helen in her inspirational "Jewel Thief" outfit.    My original idea was to perform "Baithe Hain Kya" from the 60's Bollywood film "Jewel Thief" -- in authentic quirky Helen-style -- but I figured this was a bad way to endear myself to a non-Hindi speaking audience.  The seed was already planted in my head, though: how could I perform a song -- any song -- without wearing the sparkly, feather-bedecked outfit Helen wore?

So I gave the geniuses at Delirium a seemingly impossible task: could they design and construct Helen's "Jewel Thief" outfit for me?  Lydia said "of course," and what she came up with was -- shockingly -- even MORE fabulous than the original.  Yay to Helen, and an even bigger yay to Lydia!

Next, the music...what could be short, sweet, bombastic and fun enough?  After chopping 2 minutes of tap-dancing out of Ann Miller's classic "Too Darn Hot," the choice was clear.  And who else to perform it with but Sebastian, the 50's dancey-pants drag king?  We practiced in the cool basement of my workplace, much to the amusement of whoever happened to be playing ping-pong down there at the time.  Before long we were ready to unleash our little number on the pageant audience, and everything came together beautifully.  Dan's stunning hairdo completed the picture (and it stayed up all night, too!)

Thanks so much, Frank, for filming the show for us!  At least 8 drag queens are forever in your debt, and that's a lot of Jones Soda...
